A post at the Web Standards Project alerted me to some great Web standards materials at the MACCAWS site. I don’t know about you, but when I look around at most school Web sites I see a lot of sites that could use Web standards makeovers. If you’re looking for a Web standards primer for yourself or a well-written document that you can give to a decision maker in your organization, the MACCAWS articles look like a great start.

Implementing Web standards (Part Deux)
A List Apart has just published “Retooling Slashdot with Web Standards II.” Another great article. A lot of schools are promoting handheld computers these days. Wouldn’t it be great if Web designers made their sites more compatible with mobile devices? Read the article for some info on using CSS to make site printer-friendly and handheld-friendly.
Implementing Web standards
Our head Web guru at Hopkins, Sid Chadda, is leading a group that is discussing implementing new standards for the Web pages here at Hopkins. At our last meeting we discussed Web standards compliance on our site. Few of our current pages validate to any current HTML spec and don’t come anywhere near Section 508 compliance. The group agreed that better attention to standards should be a priority for future Web development.
Soon after that meeting I saw an article at A List Apart called Retooling Slashdot With Web Standards. I don’t think I’ve seen a better example of recoding an existing site. I’m inspired to take a stab at redoing one of our pages.
