Open source All-Star team
November 8th, 2006 | by Tim Wilson |I’m doing a talk at this year’s TIES Education Technology Conference called “Open Source Tools You Can Use.” Here’s the description:
From tech support systems to graphics applications, there are hundreds of free and open source applications that will fit easily into your school’s technology environment. Participants will learn about the open source software model and get a “top 10” list of open source applications.
Now I’ve got plenty of ideas in my head about what apps will constitute my top 10 list, but I’d like to hear from you. What open source applications would make it on your All-Star team?

I’m sure I’ll have a mix of IT folks and teachers. On the server side, I think Request Tracker for trouble ticketing, MediaWiki, ELGG, and K12LTSP would be candidates. Also Celestia on the desktop is really great.

I almost forgot OpenOffice! VLC is also great for multimedia playback.

I would recommend Joomla for school Web sites. It’s incredibly configurable and has hundreds of modules that can be added for almost any purpose. Once you add the JCE module for rich text editing, you can upoload pictures, files, videos, podcasts, etc. from a toolbar. Teachers love it.
