Anything that makes Google Earth just a bit more real to students is a great thing. Putting buildings that relate to the subject of the curriculum right on the spot where they belong is powerful. I have already used the GoogleEarth Forums to get some 3D downloads of the Pyramids of Giza. I teach 6th grade in CA, and our Social Studies curriculum includes ancient civilzations, so this is gold!
I predict that SketchUp will enable teachers like me to get more images of key buildings all over the world, and this will make their use of GoogleEarth that more more powerful!

I had a student using Sketchup earlier this year. I posted an example of his work at: http://oakland.stillwater.k12.mn.us/1to1.html .
I see a lot of potential for it in the classroom. One recommendation (slight hack) - download the component libraries from the full version and add them to the free version. They add furniture, architectural features, plants, etc.
