Recommended video podcasts
January 17th, 2006 | by Tim Wilson |Since buying my 30-GB iPod I’ve had the chance to try some video podcasts. (I can’t bring myself to use the term “vodcast.”) Here are four winners that I’ve found so far:
- Quirky and newsy: Rocketboom. Always good for a chuckle.
- Geeky: dl.tv with Patrick Norton and Robert Herron for the latest in gadgetry.
- Polished and educational: Izzy Video with Israel Hyman.
- Really cool idea: Rolling R’s with Larry Keim for a quick Spanish fix.
The last two, Izzy Video and Rolling R’s, deserve special mention. Both are outstanding examples of short-form, free, educational video content. I’ve picked up some great tips from Israel Hyman that will help make my next video project more polished and professional. And I’ve learned a lot already about speaking Spanish from Larry. Just like audio podcasting, you don’t need a portable player to appreciate this content. But I’ve already used these video podcasts to kill time waiting for meetings to start which I wouldn’t or couldn’t have done without my iPod. Portable video really works.

Tim,
Just like you, I had to get the new iPod with video. It is my third iPod (the original and the nano are the others). My wife has a shuffle and a nano.
I purchased the “Commander in Chief” TV series because I had heard good things about it and I hadn’t been watching it or recording it on TiVo. The quality is great on the iPod and better than VHS quality when playing it back on a TV. You can use the video cables that come with a mini DVD camcorder, just realize that the video isn’t on the yellow.
I have also put some educational DVDs onto the iPod, and am working on getting United Streaming videos onto the iPod.
Here are a few video podcasts that I have subscribed to. Some for personal interest, some to show educational uses of the video podcasts.
