Tech guy for hire
My school district got an unpleasant surprise recently when the auditors discovered a shortfall of $4.3 million for the 2004-2005 budget year. The district has prepared a plan to make up the shortfall as quickly as possible, but the bad news for me is that the plan means that my position is being eliminated at the end of June.
I wasn’t caught completely off guard by this, but I’m certainly disappointed. It’s been a pleasure to work in a genuinely visionary school district over the last few years. In many ways I feel like my tenure in Hopkins has been the equivalent of a graduate degree in educational and technology leadership.
I guess I’m a glass-half-full kind of guy, so I prefer to view this situation as an opportunity to consider all employment options. My family and I would prefer to stay in the Twin Cities, but who knows what possibilities will emerge. I know I have readers from around the world and I guess this is one of those times when networking of the human kind is especially valuable. If you’re a regular reader you probably already have a pretty good idea of the kind of work I like to do. Please don’t hesitate to let me know about interesting employment opportunities by emailing me at tim@technosavvy.org. I’m most interested in technology integration or Director of Technology jobs at this point, but would certainly be open to other ideas.
Whatever happens, I’ll definitely keep blogging.
Good grief Tim, this is terrible news. With your superb skills, however, I am sure another great opportunity is just around the corner. When one door closes, many others can open. Stay positive! Maybe this is an opportunity for you to find a way to finish your doctorate. Keep us posted and best of luck.
Tim,
This is horrible. The state of Minnesota needs to break ground in E-learning and using open source. You are the PERFECT person to help Minnesota move forward. You are a brave warrior in the battle to introduce new technology into K-12 , and we know that warriors get lots of arrows in the back. You were the first to pioneer Zope as a CMS in K-12 Please feel free to use me as a reference any time. I will also be sending you an invite to my LinkedIn network.

WOW! How can they fail to see that short fall? I feel for you. I think that more of us will be in that boat sooner or later. It appears that some of the districts are just not aware, or keeping their head in the sand.
Tim,
I’ll admit I don’t read as much content here as I should…
I’m sad to hear that your work at Hopkins is coming to an end. It’s really great seeing you apply the knowledge you have to help staff, students, and technology. We miss you, or at least I miss you, over at Independent School District 197. It seems that our administration is finally waking up to the need for tech driven curriculm. Although, as I am sure you know, they are doing it all bass ackwards.
Here’s to your next job and learning opportunity, let it be a great venture!

Just wanted to let you know I have been following your technology musings for a month or so now and have been VERY inspired to introduce some new ideas in my school. I hope you will be able to keep up your postings when you make your move, but either way I wish you the best!
Thank you!
John
