Canonical Wiki list

July 3rd, 2004 | by Tim Wilson |

I continue to consider how wikis can be used with students and have been second guessing my decision to install Mediawiki, the software that runs the Wikipedia. Not that Mediawiki isn’t powerful software, it’s just that it may be a little too complex. Now that Moodle has a built-in wiki module I’m also thinking that using Moodle’s authentication, and thereby keeping the “bad guys” away from our educational wikis, would ease the concerns of many. In searching for alternative wiki engines, I discovered the so-called canonical list of wiki engines. I knew there were a lot of wiki engines to choose from, but I had no idea that there were that many.

We’ve alsoi ended up with wikipedia and there are similar rumblings about what may or may not result related to authentication… out Tech minister has informed us that there may be a way to force logins… but I’m not sure if I likes it… I’ll write more down the line when it’s either failed / mildly succeeded ;o)

    Cheers, James

Thanks for the info James. So far I’ve installed Mediawiki and MoinMoin. I’m going to try twiki next and see how that goes. I want something that I can easily upload attachments and images and get them displayed on the wiki pages. I’ll definitely check out your recommendations.

Try Tiki, too, although it is big and complex like mediawiki too. And pmwiki looks nice, but I don’t know if it supports user logins and easy image attachments. I think that is the wiki engine used at edwiki.org

I encourage you all to share your notes on choosing a wiki for use with students. You’re welcome to use my educational wikis at http://coedit.net. Maybe we could create a new page at http://wikiguide.coedit.net, like ChoosingaWikiEngineForSchool or something like that.

And I started a page a while back with a few pointers on GIS, but not much, if you want to share any of your notes there too:
