Monday Session I
November 24th, 2003 | by Tim Wilson |Eleven Tools for Creating Cross-Platform Digital Portfolios presented by Morrie Reece, Senior Education Development Executive at Apple Computer
Morrie started with three questions: What is a portfolio? Why do we create them? How do you store portfolios?
Portfolio News is a publication of the Portfolio Assessment Clearinghouse. I’ll have to look this up later. What should go into a portfolio? What could go into a digital portfolio?
- Digital photographs
- Images from a scanner
- Student computer graphics
- Student projects on the Web
- Speech and theater performances
- Musical performances and music competition
- Student-created animations
- Digital movies
- Text and written documents
What tools are needed to build these kinds of portfolios? There are two major requirements: must be cross-platform and must not require the viewer to purchase any extra software just to view the portfolio.
Four questions to ask: What do the tools need to do? Capture, record, store, and display. What format do I store the portfolio in? Quicktime, PDF, and HTML. Where do I store the portfolio? On the Web, on a server, on video tape, on a CD, and in the near future DVD. What will someone need to view the portfolio? A web browser, QuickTime player, Acrobat Reader.
The eleven tools are:
- Macintosh with Firewire, USB, big hard drive, CD/DVD burner (remember he works for Apple
- Audio recorder (e.g., iPod with microphone)
- Digital camera
- DV camcorder
- Scanner
- Appleworks (or Office) Don’t forget OpenOffice.org!
- iMovie
- QuickTime Pro
- iPhoto
- Adobe Acrobat
- Web authoring software
Check out Apple Learning Interchange for a lot more info on digital portfolios. Morrie will be putting his presentation up on his Web site.
