Eleven Tools for Creating Cross-Platform Digital Portfolios presented by Morrie Reece, Senior Education Development Executive at Apple Computer

Morrie started with three questions: What is a portfolio? Why do we create them? How do you store portfolios?

Portfolio News is a publication of the Portfolio Assessment Clearinghouse. I’ll have to look this up later. What should go into a portfolio? What could go into a digital portfolio?

  1. Digital photographs
  2. Images from a scanner
  3. Student computer graphics
  4. Student projects on the Web
  5. Speech and theater performances
  6. Musical performances and music competition
  7. Student-created animations
  8. Digital movies
  9. Text and written documents

What tools are needed to build these kinds of portfolios? There are two major requirements: must be cross-platform and must not require the viewer to purchase any extra software just to view the portfolio.

Four questions to ask: What do the tools need to do? Capture, record, store, and display. What format do I store the portfolio in? Quicktime, PDF, and HTML. Where do I store the portfolio? On the Web, on a server, on video tape, on a CD, and in the near future DVD. What will someone need to view the portfolio? A web browser, QuickTime player, Acrobat Reader.

The eleven tools are:

  1. Macintosh with Firewire, USB, big hard drive, CD/DVD burner (remember he works for Apple :-)
  2. Audio recorder (e.g., iPod with microphone)
  3. Digital camera
  4. DV camcorder
  5. Scanner
  6. Appleworks (or Office) Don’t forget OpenOffice.org!
  7. iMovie
  8. QuickTime Pro
  9. iPhoto
  10. Adobe Acrobat
  11. Web authoring software

Check out Apple Learning Interchange for a lot more info on digital portfolios. Morrie will be putting his presentation up on his Web site.
